Autism Awareness and the 2014 Boston Red Sox
FACT: Owning your own biz is toughFACT: Owning a Not-for-Profit business is damn near impossible.
REALITY: Many people know that I have been trying to make a go of it in the nonprofit world. My Broad Spectrum Project was slowly getting its feet off the ground, but it never quite took flight. So it was time to reevaluate things a bit.
The Broad Spectrum project is still happening, just not as a nonprofit. I came to the realization that not only did I not have the spare time in my life to fundraise, have board meetings, and all the other things that go with not-for-profit ownership, but I also know that it was going to be REALLY really difficult to convince people to give me thousands of dollars to photograph other people’s loved ones affected by Autism.
I decided to switch gears: I will continue to do my work with folks affected by Autism, but it will now be through me and only me. (Unless it's a big event; then I am so fortunate to have loads of awesome photographers that always offer to volunteer their time to help capture events.) I am still the official photographer for Autism Speaks New England, and I will still be going to people's homes to capture their loved ones doing what they do. As my buddy Joe said, "I've never seen anything like it. You are the pied piper of Autism; kids just respond to you." I take that as a HUGE compliment.
So how will it work? The service will be donation-based. Sliding scale, so to speak. Just drop me a line, and I'm happy to discuss a portrait session with you.
As I mentioned before I am still the official photographer for Autism Speaks New England, and I couldn't be happier about it. I will be covering the big walk this fall as well, and the Nantucket walk with Bob and Suzanne Wright in August. In the beginning of May, I was lucky enough to cover my 2nd year with The Boston Red Sox and Autism Speaks for Autism Awareness day at Fenway Park. Here are some of the images from that day.
